Here are a few strategies to quickly find a good graphic designer:

Avoid one-dimensional portfolios:

A great designer will have a wide variety of attractive work, in often wildly varying industries. Lacking this is a major red flag, and can mean you end up getting design work that looks boring. Ideally, you want a designer that truly listens to your vision, and understands the message and emotions you want your customers to feel, and delivers a unique solution to your particular problem.

They ask questions:

I don’t recommend hiring anyone who’s not keen to talk with you first, to understand who you are and what you most need in design. Find someone who shows a genuine concern to know you and asks questions. This is a solid start for finding a gem of a designer who’ll represent your business well, visually.

They’re comfortable talking about their process:

This echoes the importance of getting to speak to your designer, and is why so much bad design comes from hiring on cheap websites like “Fiver.com”. Discovering the designs you love can require some editing and clarification. How does your designer work? What do they expect from you to get started, and will they edit and return to your work for enhancements?
